To cultivate olive trees:

The olive is a medium-sized evergreen tree, very suitable to be cultivated as an ornamental plant; the limited and very slow growth makes it ideal also for medium or small gardens. It produces a well-developed root system, therefore it is advisable to cultivate it in the open ground, even if the young specimens can be raised in pots. The olive tree is planted in a very sunny position, we avoid the shadow that could cause a stunted growth of the tree and favor the development of pests and diseases. It adapts to any type of soil, but certainly the best development is in very loose and very well drained soils. Before planting an olive tree we work the soil thoroughly, mixing pumice stone or lapillus, which increase the passage of water into the soil, aerating it; we also add to the substratum of mature organic fertilizer, which will provide the minerals needed for the plant over the months. Olive trees are not afraid of drought, and can develop without problems even in arid places; when we plant a new specimen it is necessary to favor a good rooting, therefore we proceed watering the plant in abundance at the time of the planting, and we repeat the watering every 15-20 days, above all if the climate is very hot and dry; from the second year onwards the watering will be carried out only on very young specimens, while the adult specimens are generally satisfied with the water supplied by precipitation. The pruning of the olive trees cultivated for ornamental purposes occurs by simply clearing the crown of excessively intricate ramifications, raising all the side suckers, which often develop throughout the year, and also shaping the foliage in the way that suits us best.
