Lavatera: plant description and material collection
Lavater varieties can be both annual and perennial. Flowers in the form of a racemose-paniculate inflorescence, depending on the variety, of different shades: light pink, crimson, red, yellow, snow-white, blue, lilac, etc. They can be about 7-12 mm in diameter.
The leaves are alternate, three- or five-lobed. Lavatera is highly prized for its decorative, delicate and vibrant colors. In length, the plant can grow up to 150 cm. Lavatera goes well with other plants.
It can be planted in flower beds, balconies and rooms. Plant varieties are distinguished: Three-month Lavater, Thuringian Lavatera, and others. Lavater seeds for planting begin to be collected in early autumn.
During this period, the inflorescences become dry and after falling off, the capsules remain. Initially, they are bright green, and the brown-brown color of the capsules will signal that seeds can be harvested. When ripe, the seeds turn brown with a grayish tint. Moreover, they can easily fall out of the box.
To collect the seeds of the lavater, you need to carefully cut the boxes and pour them onto white paper. Then dry them in a well-ventilated area. You can store planting material in a paper bag or cloth bag. When buying planting material, you must adhere to the following recommendations so as not to purchase poor quality seeds:
- View expiration date
- Examine plant data and growing requirements
- Learn about the timing of sowing seeds
- Buy only certified seeds
It is not recommended to buy seed material from unfamiliar sellers and in suspicious packaging.
Features of preparing soil and seeds for planting
Seeds must be prepared and processed immediately before planting. The seeds are spread on a clean surface. Then dip them into saline solution. Healthy and undamaged seeds will settle to the bottom, and empty ones will rise up. Seeds that have settled to the bottom, rinse with cold water, and then place in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Lavater primer should be nutritious and light.
It is recommended to grow in a windless area. As well as seeds, the soil must be prepared for planting. It should be dug to a depth of 30 cm and during this event fertilizers should be applied: mullein solution and one teaspoon of phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium. Add 5 kg of compost to this composition per 1 sq. M. Then level the ground with a rake and dig out the grooves. After that, you can start sowing seeds.
Lavater can be grown in two ways: seedling method and sowing seeds in open ground. The first method of growing lavater is used in large agricultural companies, but many growers are also successfully used. When growing seedlings at home, you need to decide on the timing of planting a lavater on a flower bed.
If you plan to plant a plant in open ground in May, then it is recommended to plant seeds for seedlings in March. The seeds can be planted in any container: wooden boxes, flower pots, plastic cups, etc. Normal soil is suitable for planting. It is important not to forget to lay a drainage layer on the bottom. After sowing, cover the containers with foil and place in a well-lit place.
Seedlings should appear in 2 weeks under normal lighting and optimal temperature. From time to time, seedlings need to be watered and turned in different directions to the sun. Landing in open ground is carried out when the weather is warm. When transplanting seedlings, you must adhere to the 20x25 scheme. This distance between the seedlings will allow you to grow lush flowers.
Sowing seeds can be carried out directly into the ground. This method is only suitable for regions with a warm climate. The optimal time is the beginning of May. Landing is performed under the covering material. In the area where the lavater will grow, it is necessary to make grooves. Next, the seed is laid out in grooves to a depth of about 1 cm.Fill the ground with a mixture of humus and garden soil from above. Then pour abundantly and cover with foil. The covering material is removed as soon as the seedlings grow by 4-5 cm. The picking of the seedlings is performed with the appearance of 2-3 leaves.
Seedling and adult plant care
After removing the film, loosen the soil and apply mineral fertilizers. Lavatera begins to bloom one month after germination. When growing in seedlings, you also need to take care of the lavater. Top dressing is performed every 2 weeks and only 3 times. The first fertilizer is applied 10 days after the pick.
Further care consists in watering and feeding. Water the flower once a week, but in case of drought, watering is increased up to 2 times. The required amount of water per bush is 20 liters. In case of drought, the plant should be sprayed. During the procedure, you need to ensure that water does not get on the buds. Otherwise, they will get wet and wither.
Top dressing of adult plants is carried out before the appearance of buds and after their formation. When fertilizing immediately before planting, then for feeding, take one tablespoon of urea and nitrophoska and dilute in a bucket of water. If fertilizers have already been introduced into the ground, then feeding is performed when buds are formed: a tablespoon of potassium and sodium sulfate in a bucket of water.
Lavatera grows to a height of 1.5 meters. The plant branches well, but its stems are not strong enough. To prevent them from breaking, it is recommended to tie them to a support. To this end, drive stakes about 80 cm long into the ground and tie them up. Loosening is carried out once a week until the lavater reaches a height of one meter. After that, this event is not carried out, since the roots can be damaged.
It is necessary to remove weeds in a timely manner, otherwise they will interfere with normal development. In mature plants, weed removal is no longer necessary as they do not grow together. It is important not to forget to prune wilted flowers. If there are dried and damaged branches, then they are also removed. Lavatera does not require special care, however, in order to achieve abundant flowering, all care recommendations should be followed.
