Someone Karl Linnaeus gave the name to this beautiful flower. Fascinated by the variety of flowers and plant species, he named it "protea". Proteus is the god of the seas in ancient Greek mythology, who is able to take on various forms.

He appeared in the form of wonderful birds and extraordinary animals, as well as in the form of water and fire, surprising everyone with his beauty. It is not for nothing that a beautiful flower will receive such a name, because even in a single copy, there are leaves that differ in shape and shade. There are yellow, purple, pale pink color options. The shape of exotic flowers resembles outlandish cups, stars, sea urchins.

Description of the protea and features of the plant

Artichoke protea belongs to a large family of Proteaceae, which includes about 1400 species growing in tropical and subtropical climatic zones. The homeland of the flower is South Africa, where it is a favorite plant of the local population. The people of South Africa even chose him as a symbol of the state.

And in our country, Protea is the favorite of flower growers. Its hedgehog-like needles look quite impressive, and the leaves are original. The conditions in which the flower grows at home are quite harsh:

  • monsoon climate
  • poor soil
  • prolonged droughts

A similar climate affected the appearance of the Protea. Its leaves are like needles, and flowers grow in large groups, to protect from winds and form a shadow in the place of growth. So the earth does not heat up to critical temperatures and moisture does not evaporate completely. A number of species have special underground stems for storing water.

But the most important feature for which they fell in love with Protea is huge, spectacular inflorescences, bright colors. The diameter of a row of them is thirty centimeters! This culture is not as easy to grow as many growers would like. But with its beauty it deserves that flower lovers try to keep it. White and orange, yellow and lilac shades of color are combined in bright and variegated combinations.

Growing a plant

Locations: Africa and Australia, the plant is in high demand and grows well in parks and gardens. But the conditions of the temperate climate of our latitudes do not allow growing a flower in an open space. It turns out to be successfully planted only in greenhouses or botanical gardens. But, despite this, stubborn lovers of Protea are trying to raise it at home. And they do it! The following parameters will be comfortable for the artichoke protea:

  • An abundance of sunshine
  • Lighting in cloudy weather
  • Frequent airing of the room

Maintaining the temperature at least +25 degrees in the summer. The plant propagates by seeds. Before planting, they must be soaked; for this, the seeds should be placed in wet sand and kept in the cold for several weeks. Immediately before sowing, the seed is immersed in warm water for 24 hours. Azalea soil is used for the substrate; fine sand and perlite can be poured into it.

This will improve the growth of the plant. The pots are selected not deep, with a large base diameter. Drainage is placed at the bottom, and soil above. The seed is planted to a depth equal to two dimensions of its length. When the protea is planted, it is given watering with boiled water and covered with a film on top to maintain the greenhouse effect. Remember to ventilate the plant from time to time by removing the shelter.

Rose flower care

Germination occurs after five to seven weeks. When the first two leaves hatch, the film is removed and the flowerpot is placed on the sunniest place in the apartment. What kind of care does a proteus need? The most important thing is not to flood the flower, this can provoke its death. Watering is carried out with settled and slightly acidified water. Proteus does not require special feeding. When sunlight and airing is provided, it remains to expect the growth of a capricious flower.

This process is quite long, because indoor protea will bloom only after five to six years. Flower pruning is generally not done, only after flowering is the inflorescence cut off and the shoot is shortened by ten centimeters.

With intensive growth, in the spring before transplanting, you can shorten the branches by a third of their length. But plant transplantation should be done quite often. Young, not yet flowering proteas are planted every year. At the beginning of spring, they change the pot to a larger one, while it is important to keep the whole lump of earth with roots intact. Adult plants are transplanted only if they have completely filled the space of the flowerpot with roots.

Application of artichoke protea

In the places where it grows, the artichoke protea has the name "pot of honey" because its nectar is used as a medicinal cough medicine. In our latitudes, it does not grow, therefore, it has not found wide application.

But her dry flowers are very beautiful and suitable for creating collages and paintings. The overseas flower brings exoticism and charm to them. Almost all plant varieties dry out perfectly and keep their shape well, only after a while their color fades.
