How to get rid of tree hemp without uprooting using chemicals

Every gardener periodically needs to remove the tree. The reasons for this may be different, but problems with the roots remaining in the soil will definitely arise.

The task is significantly complicated by the fact that, as a rule, it is not possible to organize the entrance of special equipment in the conditions of a summer cottage; removal by physical means is not within the power of every owner, or owner, of a suburban area. Naturally, the question arises of how to get rid of the tree hemp without uprooting. How complex and costly this process is should be considered in more detail.

Choosing the best option for removing the stump

The part of the trunk and the root remaining after cutting the tree, if desired, can not be removed, they can serve as an unusual attractive element of the plot decor.

In particular - a support for climbing plants, they can be used to make a decorative table or bench, other, no less original options are possible. The choice is often dictated by the peculiarities of decorating the garden or the entire plot.

Landscape designers generally recommend not getting rid of stumps, but collecting the most attractive specimens of them and creating rutaria, i.e. root gardens. If this option is approached with imagination, then the composition created on the basis of the unrooted remains of sawed trees can become the highlight of a landscape garden.

But if the old tree was infected with pests or diseases, then removing the stump is a mandatory procedure. Even a small part of it left in the ground can become a source of infection for all plants on the site.

In a small garden, leaving stumps from old trees is also not rational - they will take up too much space.

In what cases is it possible to use special equipment

Which removal methods are best to resort to is not an easy question. Of course, if the tree to be removed is large, you can attract specialists and equipment, but it is possible to lean towards this option only if the site has a solid size, there are no buildings and young plantings on it.

From the point of view of cost, this option is justified only if it is necessary to remove many trees or stumps. Usually, this method is resorted to if it is planned to build up a plot previously allotted for the cultivation of fruit or ornamental trees.

Uprooting by hand - pros and cons

Before deciding to uproot the stump manually, you should evaluate your strength and acquire auxiliary tools. The application of this method does not require financial costs, the work can be completed within one or two days, but it will take considerable physical effort.

Weighty arguments in favor of manual uprooting are:

  • very limited space for action
  • close placement of vegetable beds, buildings, trees
  • uprooting young trees, the roots of which have not yet grown very much

There are times when special equipment cannot be adjusted and chemicals or fire are not used, you will have to use manual labor. But this method is considered outdated today.

Under certain conditions, experts still recommend using chemical reagents to remove stumps.

Chemical root removal

The point is that wood, under the influence of chemically active substances, rather quickly turns into dust, which greatly simplifies the process of cleaning the site from stumps.

As means of chemical action are used:

  • salt
  • saltpeter
  • urea

It is recommended to plan planting in place of removed stumps no earlier than in a couple of years, they will be needed for the complete destruction of the wood.

How to burn out a tree stump with saltpeter

Sodium or potassium nitrate can be used as a chemical reagent. Their penetration deep into the wood will lead to the complete death of the horse system of the tree, regardless of its size. It should be borne in mind that saltpeter, in the end result, will penetrate deep into the soil along the root and accumulate in it.

The task is to drill several holes on the surface of the hemp, 35-40 cm deep and 1 cm in diameter. At least 100 g of nitrate is poured into each of them. Then water is poured.

It is best to close the holes tightly with wooden plugs so that the saltpeter does not wash out in the rain. If this procedure is carried out in the summer, then in the spring of next year you can start burning the stump.

With the onset of heat, the holes are opened and gasoline is poured into them, then set on fire. It is imperative to observe the safety precautions!

Since, as a result of exposure to high temperatures, nitrate releases oxygen, the flame actively spreads in the ground, and even small roots burn out.

It should not be forgotten that it is categorically impossible to use saltpeter for uprooting stumps in peat soils. Doing so can cause a fire!

The advantages of the method include:

  • fairly quick result
  • overgrowth from the roots does not appear
  • labor costs are minimal

The costs will not be so much, you just need to purchase saltpeter from a specialized gardening store.

How is the removal of stumps with urea, what are the advantages

The work is carried out in the same way as when burning with saltpeter. More holes will speed up the work of the chemical. This method is not fraught with danger; you will not need to set fire to the stump. It will simply decompose from exposure to urea. No shoots will appear from the root.

Such an object can be covered with soil and a tree or bushes can be planted nearby. Decomposed wood and urea accumulated in the soil are excellent sources of nutrition for them.

The advantages of using urea are obvious:

  • no brute force is required
  • the soil is not contaminated with chemicals
  • the remnants of the root system are completely removed

You can use the option of removing stumps with urea on any type of soil, including peat.

How to get rid of tree hemp without uprooting, using table salt

To destroy tree roots, it is not necessary to buy special chemicals, you can use the means that are used in household use. Let's figure out how to turn a stump into dust using ordinary salt.

The procedure is as follows:

  • in the fall, it is required to drill holes in the hemp, add salt, one stump will need up to 300 g of salt
  • then add water to the holes as much as you like
  • cover the stump with soil

It will take about a year for the decomposition process, the stump processed in spring will completely decompose by next spring. Do not forget that removing stumps with salt is a process that causes soil contamination; for several years, vegetables or flowers cannot be planted on the site of the former stump.

As positive aspects, we can note the cheapness of the method, the simplicity of its implementation, but the negative aspects will be:

  • Soil pollution
  • long decomposition period of wood

We use herbicides instead of uprooting

If the stump is impressive in size, you can try to remove it with herbicides, take the most popular Roundup or Tornado.

The order of work is as follows:

  • the upper part of the stump is cut down at such a height that a fresh cut is obtained
  • the resulting surface is poured with herbicide
  • the whole stump is wrapped tightly with plastic wrap

You can start removing the decomposed rhizome next summer, i.e. in about a year.

The method is quite simple and effective, the costs will not be significant, for the purchase of a herbicide and a polyethylene film.

Non-standard, but quite effective options

When discussing options for how to turn a stump into dust, you should remember other methods, they are not used so often, but the results are good.

With water

You can even get rid of an old stump with water. Before the onset of winter frosts, the wood is watered abundantly. Under the influence of negative temperatures, the water that has saturated the wood crystallizes, increases in volume and breaks the stump from the inside.

By spring, the stump usually decomposes to such an extent that it is easily pulled from the ground, while minimal efforts are applied.

The second method, using water, will require digging a hole about half a meter from the hemp to be removed. With a good pressure, water is supplied from a hose to the root, quickly flushes it out of the ground. At the same time, the dirt flows into a pit prepared in advance.

As a result of such actions, the roots will be cleared of the soil. Next, you just need to chop them with an ax and pull out the remains of the tree to the surface.

Turning the stump into a mushroom growing area

In the remains of the tree trunk, cuts are made, they are filled with spores of honey agarics or oyster mushrooms. After abundant watering of the stump, it is wrapped in foil for the whole winter.

A good harvest of mushrooms can be harvested in the spring. You can use stumps in this way for 4-5 years, during which time they completely freeze. They can then be removed from the soil without much effort.

Using this option, you can get a double benefit, and without special financial costs.

We use engine oil processing

Consider how to destroy a stump using mining. Previously, the stump will need to be dug to a depth of 15-20 cm.

Remove the bark from the trunk, lubricate it with working off and attach it back to the trunk, then sprinkle it with soil.

It can take several years to break a tree stump using this method.

Growing new trees in place of old stumps

Experienced gardeners use this method to grow young trees in place of old ones. With the help of a chainsaw, the stump is cut off at ground level, a deepening is made in the trunk, complex mineral fertilizers are introduced and a seedling is planted.

While developing, the roots of a young plant destroy rotten wood and get fertilizers from it.

In a few years, in place of the old plant, we get a strong, new tree.

Using a chainsaw

Using the tool remove all available rhizome fragments. The method is cheap and not complicated, but not very effective; it can be used as a temporary measure. Usually, soon after such work, young shoots appear.

Stump grinder

This special tool is capable of destroying wood to a depth of 40 cm, while the roots of plants located nearby are not damaged. The work is done quickly.

The device itself is small in size. Wood shredding is done by milling. The root breaker is more difficult to use if the stumps are very large in diameter.

But with such obvious advantages, the device has no less significant disadvantages - a very high cost, even renting such a unit is not a cheap pleasure.

If the purchase of a shredder is a settled matter, then you should contact stores specializing in the sale of gas mowers, chainsaws and other similar equipment, or make an order via the Internet.

Some helpful tips

Before starting work, you should analyze the situation and choose the cheapest method, with the least labor costs.

If the site is intended for development, it is rational to use saltpeter, it acts faster than urea. On the territory of future beds or flower beds, it is better to use urea, because saltpeter will burn out all the vegetation around the stump. The negative effect of using urea in a garden is minimal.

To facilitate the process of removing rhizomes, it is sometimes rational to use a winch. But during work, you should be extremely careful, you can get injured from a suddenly bursting cable or rope, and from a stump that suddenly jumped out of the ground. It is better to stay away from the places of the possible trajectory of its flight.

If an ax is used in the work, it should be that other participants in the process are at a safe distance.

When working with chemical reagents, one should not refuse to use personal protective equipment and overalls, it is especially important to protect eyes and hands from the substances used. Moreover, hand protection is important not only when working with saltpeter; urea should also not be sprinkled with unprotected hands.

As for the timing of the work, we can recommend the following:
the optimal time for the introduction of chemical reagents is autumn or late summer, when the fruits have already been harvested from the plants growing nearby. Who will eat vegetables that have accumulated excess amounts of nitrates or other equally hazardous chemicals?

It is very difficult to give an unambiguous answer which method of removing stumps is better. If mechanical removal is the fastest, then it is also the most costly in terms of money, the use of special equipment is fraught with the need to restore order in the entire area, in addition, it is generally impossible to use it in a small area.

When choosing a method, it is imperative to take into account the specific circumstances and characteristics of the site.
